Understanding Tipping in Canada
Tipping is a common practice in Canada for service workers in restaurants, bars, delivery services, and other hospitality industries. While not legally required, tips are an important part of service workers' income and are generally expected for good service.
Standard Tipping Guidelines
- Full-Service Restaurants: 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is standard
- Exceptional Service: 20-25% or more for outstanding service
- Adequate Service: 15% is the minimum for acceptable service
- Poor Service: 10% or less, but consider speaking to management
- Bars & Cafes: $1-2 per drink, or 15-20% of the tab
- Food Delivery: 10-15% of the order, minimum $3-5
- Takeout: 5-10% is appreciated but not required
- Buffets: 10% is typical for the server's service
When to Tip More
- Exceptional, attentive service that goes above and beyond
- Large party service (6+ people) requiring extra coordination
- Complicated orders or special requests handled well
- During busy times when service remains excellent
- When you're a regular customer at an establishment
Splitting Bills
When dining with a group, it's common to split the bill evenly or by what each person ordered. Use this calculator to determine each person's share including tip. Remember that some restaurants may charge an automatic gratuity (usually 18%) for large parties of 6 or more.
Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Tipping
In Canada, it's standard practice to calculate tips based on the pre-tax amount of the bill. However, some people prefer to tip on the post-tax total for convenience when the percentage is already displayed on the bill. Either method is acceptable.
Tips for Different Services
- Taxi/Rideshare: 10-15% of the fare
- Hair Salon: 15-20% of the service cost
- Hotel Housekeeping: $3-5 per night
- Valet Parking: $2-5 when car is returned
- Moving Services: $20-30 per mover for a standard move
Important Notes
This calculator helps you calculate appropriate tips based on common Canadian tipping standards. Tipping is ultimately discretionary and should reflect the quality of service you received.
Service charges and gratuities may already be included in your bill, especially for large parties. Always check your bill before adding an additional tip to avoid double-tipping.
In Canada, tip amounts are not taxed when received by the employee, but service workers must report tip income for tax purposes. Tipping in cash allows service workers to receive their tips immediately.
